Professor Emeritus

Professor William Gerdts has served as Curator of Art at the Norfolk (Virginia) Museum and resident director of the historic Myers House in Norfolk, as Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the Newark (New Jersey) Museum, and as Gallery Director at the University of Maryland (College Park), where he also taught art history. He was Vice President of the Coe Kerr Gallery in New York. He joined the faculty of Brooklyn College, and The Graduate Center in 1971. He has held visiting professorships at Johns Hopkins University, Rutgers University, and Washington University. He has received a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, and an American Philosophical Society Fellowship. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters by Amherst College in 1992, and an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts by Syracuse University in 1996.
