DOCTORAL STUDY IN CHEMISTRY: ADMISSIONS Prerequisities for admission include a full year of general chemistry, organic chemistry and physical chemistry and at least a semester of quantitative analysis. In addition a year of physics and mathematics through calculus and differential equations are generally required. Advanced chemistry electives in instrumental analysis and inorganic chemistry are recommended. In general, a B or better average in these courses is expected. Application forms may be obtained by contacting the Office of Admissions, Graduate School of the City University of New York, 365 Fifth Avenue, New York, New York 10016. Results of the GRE are required. International students must submit TOEFL scores. Two letters of recommendation and academic transcripts are also required. The Application for Admission includes two items which ask about a student's intended area of specialization and the senior college at which a student prefers to do research. These web pages contain descriptions of each college and brief statements about faculty research interests to assist applicants in making these choices. Admission is possible in both the fall and spring semesters. There are no specific application deadlines, but since decisions concerning campus teaching positions are generally made in April or May, applications for the fall semester should be received early in the spring. Similarly, applications for February admissions should be received early in the fall. |
