This is the second annual graduate student conference being organized the Ph.D. Program in Classics of the Graduate Center. See the call for papers for more details, including information on how to submit an abstract. Our keynote speaker will be Barry Strauss, PhD, Professor of History and Classics at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Professor Strauss is the author of The Trojan War, A New History, Simon & Schuster, USA, 2006; The Battle of Salamis: The Naval Encounter That Saved Ancient Greece—and Western Civilization (Simon & Schuster, USA, 2004, paperback 2005); War and Democracy: A Comparative Study of the Korean War and the Peloponnesian War, co-edited with David McCann. (M.E. Sharpe, 2001); He is a co-author of Western Civilization: Beyond Boundaries, co-author (Houghton Mifflin). Fifth edition, 2008 [available December 2006]. (First-Fourth editions, entitled Western Civilization: The Continuing Experiment, 1994-2005.). His newspaper articles have appeared in the L.A. Times, the Washington Post, and Newsday. He has written on the history of warfare for MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History, Naval History, and Parameters: U.S. Army War College Quarterly. He has been interviewed for A&E, the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, the National Geographic Channel, the BBC and PBS and he has spoken at many universities, institutes, and war colleges here and abroad. Among his fellowships and honors are the Heinrich Schliemann Fellowship at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, the National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for University Teachers, and Cornell’s Clark Award for Excellence in Teaching.
