CUNY Classics offers the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Greek and Roman classics, with rigorous training in Latin and ancient Greek. Nine courses are available each semester through a consortium with Fordham and New York Universities, covering a variety of subjects in Greek and Latin literature, ancient history, and philosophy ranging from masters level surveys and composition courses to research seminars at the Ph.D. level. Courses of related interest are also available through the CUNY Ph.D. Programs in Philosophy, Comparative Literature and History, and the Certificate Programs in Medieval Studies and Renaissance Studies.

In a recent study conducted by Academic Analytics, the Ph.D. Program in Classics ranked second in the country for the scholarly achievement of its faculty, according to a Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index. Further, in the "broad" category of Humanities, The Graduate Center was ranked fourth after Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. The rankings take into account scholarly publications, honors and awards, and grants. ( These findings were reported in the January 12, 2007 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education.)Classics students have opportunities to teach in CUNY's undergraduate colleges, as well as access to excellent research facilities.

CUNY Classics participates in a consortium with New York University and Fordham University. Students may register for any courses offered in the field at any of the participating institutions and have access to all libraries at the three institutions. Students are also invited to attend lectures at the three universities as well as consortium sponsored events. Through these meetings, CUNY students have many opportunities to exchange ideas informally with other graduate students and classics faculty from throughout the city.
