Human Centered Nursing: The Foundation of Quality Care
(FA Davis Co., 2008)
2008 Book of the Year Award from the American Journal of Nursing

As the health care industry becomes increasingly consumed with scientific and technological progress, medical treatment has come to be dehumanizing for patient and provider alike. In her first book, Susan Kleiman argues that human-centered care is a necessary antidote to modern medicine’s excessive focus on function. The administration of this antidote falls primarily to nurses, who have more extensive interactions with patients than other health professionals. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the emergency room and the maternity ward, nurses must learn to make caring the focus of their work. After guiding the reader through the philosophical foundations of humanistic nursing, the book discusses a series of illuminating case studies, all intended to help nurses put theory into practice. Susan Kleiman is an assistant professor of nursing science at the Graduate Center and Lehman College.
