Admissions

The deadline for applications for the Fall, 2010 semester for professionals interested in the Community, Society and Health; Epidemiology, Environmental and Occupational Health; and Health Policy and Management tracks of the DPH program is March 1, 2010.

Requirements for admission include:

  1. Completion of a Masters of Public Health or a Masters degree in a related discipline. Candidates without an MPH degree will need to take core Masters level public health courses in addition to the required doctoral courses.

  2. At least three years of prior relevant teaching, research or programmatic work experience.
  3. Well-defined interests in urban health, strong writing skills, and completion of the general test Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (for more information, go to: www.ets.org)

  4. Each of the four specialization tracks has additional admissions requirements.
    • Community, Society and Health: At least three Masters-level courses in social dimensions of health and two quantitative research courses (e.g., Biostatistics and Epidemiology). Those in the Concentration in Public Health Nutrition must be a Registered Dietician (RD) or have completed the didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE).
    • Epidemiology: At least three Masters' level quantitative research courses (e.g. biostatistics, epidemiology and research methods), preferably with a grade of A- or better./li>
    • Environmental and Occupational Health: One course in toxicology; at least two courses in either occupational safety and health or environmental sciences; plus one course in public, environmental or occupational health law or policy.
    • Health Policy and Management: One course in health care systems, management, or administration; one course in health policy; one social science course in a cognate-related field, such as economics, sociology or political science

The application deadline is March 1, 2010 for the Fall, 2010 semester.

Information about the Application Process

The admissions packet should include the following information:

  1. The Graduate Record Exam (GRE). You will need to submit scores for the general test GRE. A minimum score is not set, but rather the scores are evaluated in a context of other measures of academic performance. Official scores must be reported by The Educational Testing Service (ETS) to The Graduate Center - College Code 2113. If this code is not used, scores will not be received. Scores sent to other CUNY colleges will not be accepted. If you took the test more than five years ago, ETS will no longer send scores to the Admissions Office at the Graduate Center, CUNY. You may submit a photocopy of your student score report to the Offices of Admissions for in-person verification prior to registration. If you have never taken the GRE before, visit www.ets.org, to register for the test as soon as possible.
  2. Two letters of recommendation. You must submit two letters of reference, written by persons who have directly supervised your work. References should be completed by persons who can comment on your academic and/or professional achievements and promise for doctoral study. At least one should be an academic reference; the second may be either an academic or a professional reference. Please submit the recommendations along with other supporting materials to The Graduate Center Admissions Office at the address above in a single large envelope.
  3. Official transcripts from each college and university previously attended. The form for requesting transcripts is available at: www.gc.cuny.edu/admin_offices/admissions/admissions_pdfs/Transcript_Req_form.pdf

    Transcript request forms and transcript return envelopes are included in the application packet for use by the applicant to request an official transcript from each college or university attended. If additional transcript request forms are needed, you may copy the forms. Do not open any of the envelopes when they are returned to you from the registrar of your previously attended colleges and universities. Submit the transcripts unopened with the application form and other materials to The Graduate Center in the main, large return envelope. Please note that a transcript must be submitted from each college or university attended even if you did not enroll in courses in the field.

    International applicants must submit original documents for all postsecondary studies. all international documents must be accompanied by certified English translations. No original international documents can be returned unless accompanied at the time of filing by copies that have been verified by admissions personnel.

  4. A recent curriculum vitae or resume.  This should describe relevant work or volunteer experience.
  5. Statement of Purpose. A 500-word essay that describes your professional goals, research interests and the reasons you want a Doctor of Public Health degree must be submitted as part of your application packet.
  6. English Language. International students must present authoritative evidence of sufficient competence in the English language to pursue a regular course of study at The City University of New York. It is required that applicants who have not studied and earned a degree in an English-speaking country take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), administered internationally by the ETS, and request ETS to report examination results directly to the Office of admissions, The Graduate Center-College 2113, 365 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10016.
