On May 22, 2007 the New York State Board of Regents approved a new CUNY Doctoral Program in Public Health. The degree awarded will be the DPH. The Doctor of Public Health Program prepares public health researchers and leaders to promote health and prevent disease among individuals living in urban settings. The Graduate Center (GC) of CUNY will award the DPH degree and will serve as home to the program. Courses are taught by doctoral faculty from the Public Health Programs at Brooklyn, Hunter and Lehman Colleges, by faculty from the Graduate Center and other participating CUNY campuses.
The DPH program prepares students as researchers, teachers, and managers who can meet urban public health needs. It prepares future faculty members for the growing number of training programs in public and community health and prepares leaders for the public health workforce. The curriculum integrates health, natural and social sciences as applied to public health. Students will be prepared as interdisciplinary urban health researchers and practitioners, capable of working across levels, disciplines and sectors to address complex public health problems with a focus on urban populations. Graduates will have the skills and knowledge to help eliminate urban health disparities, a major goal of the nation’s health blueprint, Healthy People 2010.
