PHYSICAL THERAPY

Academic Requirements

The curriculum is 105 credits and can be completed over a three-year period. In addition to course and program requirements and clinical internship performance, students will be required to pass comprehensive examinations, clinical internships, and a research project.

The First Examination will be a series of written and practical comprehensive exams in foundational science course and clinical courses as well as successful completion of the students' first clinical affiliation (the assessment tool for the clinical affiliations is the Clinical Performance Instrument (CPI), which includes detailed and specific objectives that must be successfully achieved. At CSI, the First Examination will be administered during the spring and summer of year two. At Hunter College, the First Examination is completed after the first clinical affiliation.

The Second Examination will be an oral assessment of clinical competencies and will be required after completion of the second year (At CSI, completion of the fall semester in year two, at Hunter College, completion of the spring semester in year two). This examination will consist of an oral assessment of clinical competencies. Students will be presented with case scenarios and will be asked questions about each case.

The research requirement includes a series of research courses leading toward the completion of student group research projects. Successful completion of this research requirement includes a manuscript acceptable for submission for publication. Upon graduation, each degree candidate will qualify for the National Physical Therapy Examination and state licensure.

In sum: each student is expected to satisfactorily complete:

  • 105 credits
  • First Examination
  • Second Examination
  • Four Clinical Affiliations
  • Publishable Research Project

Satisfactory Academic Progress for the Health Sciences Doctoral Programs
Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) at The College of Staten Island

Description:
A DPT student is deemed not to be making satisfactory progress if he or she:

1.  has completed 52 credits (College of Staten Island) and has not passed the First Examination
2. has a grade point average below 3.00
3.  has not completed his or her degree in nine terms after matriculation
4. has accumulated  more than two open grades (“INC,” “INP,” “NGR,” “ABS,”  and “ABP”)

Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) at Hunter College

Description:
A DPT student is deemed not to be making satisfactory progress if he or she:

1.  has completed 55 credits (Hunter College) and has not passed the First Examination
2. has a grade point average below 3.00
3.  has not completed his or her degree in nine terms after matriculation
4. has accumulated  more than two open grades (“INC,” “INP,” “NGR,” “ABS,”  and “ABP”)
