I. Advancement to Candidacy After completing 66 credits of course work,
the Second Examination, and all language exams, the student is Advanced to Candidacy. Candidates for the Ph.D. are required to write a dissertation on a subject approved by a committee of the doctoral faculty. The
dissertation is to be an original study that in the opinion of the official readers makes a genuine contribution to Comparative Literature. In terms of content and format, it should be regarded as a book. It is often
the basis for further scholarly work and publication. The dissertation is the culmination of the student's doctoral studies and is to be a serious work of original scholarship.
