EVOLUTION OF PALEOZOIC TETRAPODS
3hr., 3 cr., Tuesdays, 4:30pm-7:00pm, Room D237 SB
Professor Daniel Habib
This course will cover the skeletal evidence of the origin and evolution of tetrapod animals in the Paleozoic Era, from their early appearance as primitive vertebrates to the major tetrapod groups which dominated the landscape continually until the mass extinction event which closed this era. Emphasis will be placed on those tetrapod groups which gave rise to dinosaurs, mammals and birds, which evolved in the succeeding “Age of Reptiles” (Mesozoic Era).
The first part of the semester will consist of lectures in vertebrate origins and evolution of the important groups of tetrapods. In the second part, roundtable discussions will be held from reading assignments in the literature. The last part will close with seminars presented by students from research projects in the recent literature.
