Registration Instructions

Please Note: it is the student's responsibility to look up CRN's on the Student Web using the Class Schedule Search option. We in the office have to use the exact same search engine to access CRNs, so by calling in and asking us for CRNs, you are really just asking us to go online and do the search for you. If you need a tutorial in using the Class Schedule Search or have tried and are lost, then please feel free to touch base regarding CRNs.

Registration for the Fall 2008 semester begins May 1, 2008, for all ongoing students. (Registration after June 7, 2008, will result in a $25 late fee.) September 2 is the absolute last day to register for the Fall 2008 semester. The first day of classes is August 27.

Suggestion: Take the time to check your schedules on the student web AFTER you have registered. This is especially important if you are changing levels or doing any last minute changes, but it should be a general rule of thumb for everyone. Always check to make sure that your schedule on the student web is correct; in fact, print it out and keep a copy for your records. Printing out a copy can serve as proof if later on you run into problems.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Please note the following:

  • Be sure you know your Banner ID (look on your ID card or email Meghan Mehta, APO (mmehta1@gc.cuny.edu)) and check Student Web to see if you have any holds. If you have an academic hold, please contact Professor Steve Kruger (skruger@gc.cuny.edu). (Please put "satisfactory progress" in the subject line.) If you have a bursar or library hold, settle your bill as soon as you can with them directly.
  • If you are taking courses, before you register, have several classes in mind that you would possibly want to take. That way, if you are shut out of a course, you have backups. You'll be able to register for a maximum of 16 credits worth of courses and a minimum of 7 credits (the minimum required to maintain full time status). Remember, you will still be able to add and drop during the add/drop period.
  • The English Program has chosen not to issue advisement PINs to all students. You are also not required to meet with the Executive Officer for advisement. If you would like advice, feel free to make an appointment with Professor Kruger or any other faculty member.
  • THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT - Pay particular attention to the credit value you are registering for. If you want to take a class for 4 credits, YOU MUST enter that value. The credit is automatically set 2 credits unless manually changed.
  • If you take a 3 credit courses in another department, you may choose to sign up for a one-credit supplement through an ENGL 81000 course taught by Steven Kruger. (This is optional - if you are a Level 1 student trying to keep your tuition at a minimum you may choose to forgo it.) Meghan Mehta, APO, will need to do an override so that you can register for it - just email the mmehta1@gc.cuny.edu; the clearance will be given ASAP. If you drop your 3 credit class, you must also remember to drop this supplement.
  • If you want to take a consortium class, try to contact the professor or at least the department to make sure the class is open to you. Do not worry about registering for those classes during the first few weeks of registration.

If you are a Level 2 student and are not taking classes, see the simplified instructions below.

LEVEL 2 STUDENTS

If you are a Level 2 student taking less than 7 credits worth of graded courses, there are three possible ways for you to register:

  1. If you are not registering for any courses at all, Register on Record and for 7 Billable WIUs. BE SURE TO REGISTER FOR BOTH.
  2. If you are registering to audit classes only, register for the classes as an audit and register for 7 billable WIU.
  3. If you are registering for one class for credit (and any amount of auditing - zero classes or up to 4), please then also register for an amount of billable WIUs that will bring you up to full-time status (i.e., 7 credits). So if you're registering for one 4 credit class, you should also register for 3 Billable WIUs. If you're registering for one 2 credit class, you should also register for 5 Billable WIUs.

If you are currently Level 2, but hope to become Level 3 by the level change deadline February 9th), here's what you should do:

  1. Register as a Level 2 student (see above).
  2. Once you pass your orals or language exam (or both) and have fulfilled all other requirements to become Level 3, ask the APO for an "Advancement to Candidacy" form. You'll fill it out and return it to Meghan Mehta, APO
  3. Simultaneously, drop your ROR "course" and your 7 Billable WIUs, and add ENGL 90000 "Dissertation Supervision" with your advisor's name in the Instructor column. Locate the CRN of your dissertation director by using the Class Schedule Search.

You should check Student Web to make sure the change has gone through. The registrar's office will process these as quickly as they can; let Meghan know if you still haven't seen a change after several days.

Also, as always, the Program will offer the "Dissertation Workshop" (English 91000) , which is offered (for zero credits) each semester.

LEVEL 3 STUDENTS

Important notes:

  • If you are going to register as a Level 3 student for the first time, email Meghan Mehta (mmehta1@gc.cuny.edu) with the name of your advisor so she can do an override.
  • It is not necesary for a Level 3 student to register for WIU. Level 3 students who register for Dissertation Supervision are considered full-time students.

Registration instructions:

  1. Go to www.gc.cuny.edu and click on the green "Student Web" button
  2. Click the "Login to Secure area link," then enter your Banner ID and PIN
  3. Click "Student, Financial Aid, & Bill Payments"
  4. Click Registration, then select the Spring 2006 term
  5. Locate the CRN of your dissertation director by using the Class Schedule Search.
  6. Enter that CRN to register for Dissertation Supervision
  7. Click Submit, then check to see that you have registered for the correct CRN
  8. If you would like to audit a course, enter the CRN as usual. Then, select "audit" from the Action pulldown menu after you have registered for it
  9. Click "Complete My Registration"
  10. Your bill will now appear. Make sure it is for the correct amount. You may pay it online if you wish, or you may simply close the window and wait for a paper copy of the bill.
