Victorian Committee Group Meetings

Dear friends,

The first CUNY Victorian Seminar will be Wednesday, October 19, in the Liberal Studies seminar room (4108) of the Graduate Center (34th and 5th Avenue), at 6:30 p.m. The wine and miscellaneous crackers will be out at 6:00 if anyone would like to come early. We are meeting this late into the month because of the holidays which fall on two Wednesdays in a row. We may also add a seminar in May because the Victorian Conference this year is on the second Friday of May (we couldn’t get a room for the first Friday).

The speaker on October 19 will be:

Adrienne Munich, SUNY, Stonybrook, who will be talking on “Jews and Jewels.”

The rest of the year’s schedule is as follows:

November 2 Wednesday Patricia Laurence, The City College CUNY, talking on “China on a Willow Pattern Plate: Charles Lamb, George Meredith and Arthur Waley”
December 7 Wednesday Tim Alborn, Lehman and the Graduate Center CUNY, talking on “Death and the Salesman: Marketing Life Insurance in Victorian Britain”

February 1

Wednesday Sharon Marcus, Columbia, talking on “The Female Accessory in Great Expectations”
March 1 Wednesday Gwen Hyman, Cooper Union, talking on “Criminal Appetites and Opium Wars: The Moonstone”
April 5 Wednesday Sean O’Toole, The Graduate Center CUNY, talking on “Dickens and the Psychology of Habit”
May 12 Friday All-Day conference: "MEDICINE AND VICTORIAN CULTURE"

We hope to see you at some of the events, and as always if you are free after the seminar, plan to come to dinner at a local Irish pub with the speaker.
