The European Union Studies Center (EUSC) was established in 1993 under the directorship of Hugo M. Kaufmann,  Professor of Economics at Queens College and at the Graduate Center.

The EUSC is dedicated to promoting research and debate on the diverse issues and challenges facing the European Union. The approach to the research and analysis is interdisciplinary; it includes political, economic, legal, social and cultural aspects of the Union as a whole, as well as relations between European Union member states, and the European Union's relationship to the rest of the world. The emphasis of the studies reflects the recent developments in the EU. In addition, the Center explores the challenges of the Union's enlargement through the accession of central and eastern European countries, and, finally, the grand visions of a future for Europe -- from Confederacy to Federation: Quo vadis Europa?

In 1998, the EUSC -- in collaboration with New York University, Columbia University and the New School University for Social Research -- was selected by the European Commission to take part in a newly established network of "European Union Centers of Excellence" designed to strengthen the EU's transatlantic relations. This grant was awarded on a competitive basis, and the recently created European Union Center of New York (of which the EUSC is a part) was one of the ten institutions chosen out of  69 U.S. academic institutions that had applied. As part of this consortial arrangement, the EUSC exercises primary responsibility for the Lecture Series open to the public, and for the Occasional Paper Series which is published periodically.

If you wish to keep up-to-date by participating in our many offerings and would like to be added to the Center's electronic mailing list, please click on "Contact us" and give us your email address.

The European Union Studies Center has introduced -- in conjunction with the Economics and Political Science Departments -- an interdisciplinary concentration in European Union Studies. For further information on that program, go to "Courses."
