PROFESSOR STUART LIEBMAN

Stuart Liebman was the Coordinator of the Film Studies Certificate Program from its beginning, in 1993, until June 2000. He currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Media Studies at Queens College.

He received his Ph.D. degree in Cinema Studies from New York University in 1980 and wrote his dissertation on the film theory of French filmmaker and theorist Jean Epstein.

His areas of academic expertise include French cinema, particularly early French films and film theory, post-World War II German cinema, American avant-garde cinema, and cinematic representations of the Holocaust.

His publications include "Alexander Kluge. Theoretical Writings, Stories and an Interview" (October #46, 1988); "Berlin 1945: War and Rape. Liberators Take Liberties" (October # 72, 1995, which won the Association of American Publishers Award for the Best Single Issue of a Scholarly Journal in 1995); and "Politics and the Cinema of Jean Renoir" (Persistence of Vision, #12/13, 1996), as well as numerous articles and translations.

He is currently at work on a book about the representation of the Holocaust in world cinema.
