Office of Human Resources

Work Day/Week Policy
Full-time Staff

The work week for full-time employees is defined in the collective bargaining agreements as follows:

Librarian, HEO, CLT, Research Series titles and Classified Service titles have a 35 hour work week.

Counselors (assigned after 9/1/98) have a 35 hour work week. Counselors assigned before 9/1/98 have a 30 hour work week (except those in the HEO Series).

Security Series titles have a 40 hour work week.

Counselors assigned before 9/1/98 have a 30 hour work week (except those in the HEO Series).

Most employees are scheduled from 9:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, however, deviations are possible when the needs of the program/office and the head of office support them. All work schedules should be recorded with the head of office and in the Office of Human Resources (OHR). Heads of office should approve schedule changes and ensure that they are shared with the OHR.

Employees are expected to be in their offices or work areas and ready to work at the beginning of the work day. Lateness disrupts college operations and should be avoided. Lateness must be charged to annual leave at a minimum of 15 minute intervals when it occurs. Chronic lateness may result in poor evaluations, penalties, and possible disciplinary action.

A 20 minute coffee break (15 minutes plus 5 minutes for transportation) may be taken between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. for staff who work between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Breaks should be taken at a time scheduled and agreed upon by the supervisor. Breaks may not be used to extend lunch hours, make up for lateness, or to leave early at the end of the day.

A Staff Lounge is available in Room 8313. The Staff Lounge contains soft seating, a microwave, and a refrigerator for employee use.

Annual leave accruals and unscheduled holidays may be used with the prior approval of the supervisors. Absences due to illness should be reported to the supervisor and OHR as early as possible. Please see the Jury Duty and Family Medical Leave policies if you have questions on these types of absences.

Special announcements are made if CUNY authorizes summer work schedules.
