Office of Human Resources

Work-Day/Week Part-Time Non-Instructional Staff (Civil Service)

The work schedule for part-time staff is typically 21 hours per week but may be more or less dependent on the title, funding, and needs of the office.

Part-timers, including College Assistants, are responsible for recording the time they work on a daily basis. The policy for lateness, breaks, and the use of annual leave is the same as that described for full-time employees.

All work schedules should be recorded with the head of office and in the Office of Human Resources. Heads of office should approve schedule changes and ensure that they are shared with the Office of Human Resources.

Employees are expected to be in their office or work area and ready to work at the beginning of the work day. Lateness disrupts college operations and should be avoided. Lateness must be charged to annual leave at a minimum of 15 minute intervals. Chronic latenesses may result in poor evaluations, penalties, disciplinary action or termination.

A 20 minute coffee break (15 minutes plus 5 minutes for transportation) may be taken between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. for those who work between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Breaks should be taken at a time scheduled and agreed upon by the supervisor. Breaks may not be used to extend lunch hours, make up for lateness, or to leave early at the end of the day.

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires that employees take a half hour lunch/dinner break after five hours of work and a one hour lunch/dinner break after 6 hours. Lunch is usually for one hour scheduled with supervisory approval between the hours of 12 noon and 2:00 p.m. for employees who work between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.. The needs of the office, the assignment, or work schedule may make a one half hour lunch more practical.

Employees should notify the Office of Human Resources as early as possible before they are scheduled to work when they will be out.
