Description:

The Joseph S. Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies is a collaboration between the University and New York City labor unions, for the purpose of serving the educational, policy and research needs of unions and their members. The Institute is comprised of two centers.

The mission of the Center for Worker Education is to: 1) offer undergraduate and graduate programs to working adult students and union members; 2) expand access to colleges throughout the CUNY system; and 3) partner with labor unions and employers to address training and education needs of union members.

The Center for Labor, Community, and Policy Studies conducts research, offers leadership development programs, hosts forums and national conferences, and publishes articles, books and a national labor journal to promote debate on issues critical to labor’s future and its policy role.

The Admissions Counselor/Outreach Specialist will work with the Institute, CUNY colleges and programs, labor unions and labor management joint funds, community organizations and elected officials to conduct outreach to union members seeking degree and certificate programs. The Counselor/Outreach Specialist will work closely with the Associate Director, the Recruitment Coordinator and the recruitment team to identify potential students for new and established programs that serve union members and working adults.

Duties may include, but not limited to:

    • Plan, schedule and conduct Open House events, mailings, presentations.
    • Liaison work with CUNY colleges and labor unions to identify new and returning students.
    • Provide pre-admissions counseling to potential students.
    • Maintain data and records on student applicants.
    • Assist with the development of reports on recruitment and enrollment as needed.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required. At least two years experience with outreach and counseling in higher education preferred. Experience in labor unions and/or student services preferred. Experience with working adult students preferred. Ability to examine and adapt administrative operations and procedures. Ability to analyze and solve problems. Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, demanding, and complex work environment, carry out complex assignments and adapt to changing situations and priorities.

Skills required include: Comfort with presenting information in a range of settings to diverse individuals. Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail. Excellent writing and speaking skills. Exceptional interpersonal skills. Comfort with a range of computer skills and programs (Internet research and email, Word, Power Point, Excel, Databases). Understanding of issues that impact working adult students. Familiarity with higher education environments. Organizing experience in labor and/community organizations desired.

Salary Range: $32,197 to $39,515. Commensurate with experience and prior salary history. Excellent benefits.
