Description:
Nominations and applications are invited for the position of Associate Provost and Dean for Sciences of The Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York (CUNY). An internationally recognized center for advanced studies and a national model for public doctoral education, the Graduate Center (GC) operates as a consortium with a 1,700-member faculty, the majority of which is drawn from the CUNY colleges. More than 4,000 students are enrolled in 34 doctoral programs and 7 master’s programs at the GC, which is also home to 30 interdisciplinary research centers and institutes (http://www.gc.cuny.edu).
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Provost and serving as a deputy, the Associate Provost and Dean for Sciences assists in supervising a variety of administrative and fiscal areas, including responsibility for the joint degree programs (biochemistry, biology, chemistry, and physics), the Health Sciences doctoral programs (audiology, nursing, physical therapy, and public health), the Office of Educational Opportunity and Diversity Programs (OEODP), the science fellowships, student health insurance, instructional technology, and other areas as assigned. S/he will also be responsible for University Center operations, including the CUNY School of Professional Studies (SPS), the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, and the CUNY Baccalaureate Program. A major focus will be in assisting the Associate Provost for Humanities and Social Sciences in preparing for a site visit by a Middle States evaluation team in the fall of 2009.
Qualifications:
Candidates should possess: doctoral degree and record of scholarly achievement qualifying for appointment to the faculty preferably in the sciences, technology or mathematics; at least eight years related experience; accomplished record of significant senior administrative experience, commitment to the principles of a large, urban, public university; broad understanding of and enthusiasm for the highest standards of academic achievement both within disciplines and in innovative combinations of them; the ability to think creatively; good problem-solving skills; a high level of personal and professional integrity; demonstrated ability to manage human and financial resources; and demonstrable talent for dealing creatively, flexibly, and fairly with people and issues.
Salary Range: Salary commensurate with experience within the range for the position title in the Executive Compensation Plan.
