CUNY’s School of Professional Studies (SPS) is home to the University’s first wholly online degree, the CUNY Online Baccalaureate – helping working New Yorkers complete their undergraduate studies and succeed in their careers.  SPS also offers an array of credit and non-credit certificate programs and courses that are designed to meet the needs of working professionals and employers as well as individuals seeking opportunities for personal growth.  Housed within CUNY’s Graduate School and University Center, SPS draws on faculty from CUNY’s 19 campuses and the vast pool of experts, in a range of fields, from around New York.  SPS promises the highest levels of quality and service to its students and faculty. 

SPS is seeking highly motivated, self-starters to assist students in the Online Baccalaureate program with their tutoring needs.  The program will deliver tutoring by participating in a national online training consortium that shares tutoring resources among its members.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Student Affairs Coordinator, Academic Skills Advisors will:

  • Support students in quantitative and qualitative research as well as information literacy, across the curriculum. Specific topics include the following:  formulating research questions; designing strategies; developing and validating concepts; experimentation; finding, evaluating and citing information sources; data collection, analysis and interpretation; statistical analysis; qualitative research techniques; working in research teams; working with human subjects.
  • Guide students through the process of reporting findings.  Most research culminates in written reports and possibly oral presentations (online). Tutors must be able to assist with writing and presentation skills.
  • Conduct tutoring online, synchronously and asynchronously.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum requirements for the position:

  • Some college preferred.  Experience teaching online is preferred, but is not required.
  • Strong customer service orientation, patience, and personable nature. Enthusiasm for working with students, particularly in a virtual environment is critical.
  • Excellent online communication skills and the ability to respond to student enquiries rapidly. Ability to follow up and assess student understanding is a must.
  • Better than average computer skills; fluent in Microsoft Office applications and web-enabled communication. 
Ability to work evening or weekend hours; some scheduled and some flexible.

Salary Range: $17.80 per hour/5 hours per week
