Description:

Working closely with the Dean, the Director leads and oversees a comprehensive professional development program for students and alumni in the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism; develops and directs an innovative summer internship program; manages the provision of multiple resources for finding journalism internships and jobs; coordinates career counseling to students and alumni; and supervises personnel in the Office of Career Services.

Duties

    • Direct the paid summer internship program, a groundbreaking initiative that is making an international mark on journalism education. Oversee promotion of the program to employers and other internship partners. Coordinate counseling of students to help each of them find a suitable internship. During the summer, manage guidance and feedback to interns, consult with internship supervisors and regularly review the educational value of the for-credit internships.
    • Plan and oversee journalism career events throughout the school year, including an annual job fair and career panels and workshops.
    • Bring individual recruiters on campus throughout the year and familiarize them with the School’s curriculum and unique program characteristics.
    • Meet regularly with employers to stay abreast of changes in the journalism profession, to forge new job and internship connections and to maintain existing ones at online media, broadcast organizations, newspapers and magazines.
    • Represent the School to a broad array of media employers at numerous professional events throughout the year and to recruiters and prospective students at local and national journalism conferences.
    • Supervise career skills counseling to students and alumni, including advice on resumes, cover letters, internship essays, clip presentation, freelance-query writing, job hunting, interviewing, salary negotiation and career planning.
    • Manage the provision of online resources for students and alumni, including internship and job listings, recruiter contact information, lists of news organizations that take students’ freelance work, and lists of Web links to online job postings and other information.
    • Hire and supervise other personnel in the Office of Career Services, including full-time and part-time assistants.
    • Attend school strategy meetings and advise the deans, faculty members and other administrators on formulation of School policy and curricular enhancements to improve the readiness and marketability of its students.
    • Help prepare grant applications to secure financial support for the internship program; oversee distribution of grant funds to students based on offered salaries.
    • Work with the Office of Admissions to devise recruitment and marketing campaigns that promote career outcomes of alumni.
    • Serve on the Dean’s executive committee.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• At least 8 years of relevant experience required; 10 years as a working journalist preferred.
• Teaching and/or advisement experience with students and/or interns, at the graduate level preferred.
• Direct knowledge of and contacts within the journalism profession.
• Highly developed research skills and knowledge of journalism hiring and salary trends.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to develop and direct journalism career-related activities, including planning and conducting career events and workshops.
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, alumni and recruiters.
• Knowledge of database/content management.
• Experience supervising staff.

Salary Range: $80,020 - $92,541 Commensurate with Experience

FLSA Status: Exempt
