Description:

The Director of Development reports directly to the Dean and serves on his executive team, overseeing all development operations for the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. S/he works closely with the Dean, faculty, Associate Dean, and the school’s Board of Advisors to develop and implement identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies. S/he also works with the Office of Admissions, other senior staff and consultants to develop the School’s marketing campaign - one that will be central to fundraising as well as student recruitment efforts. For this key position, the school seeks an experienced, entrepreneurial professional with the demonstrated ability to work independently and respond effectively to a myriad of executive and management challenges.

Responsibilities:

• Oversees the design, implementation and management of all fundraising efforts at the Graduate School of Journalism including annual giving, planned giving, major gifts, corporate and foundation fundraising, and government grants.
• Engages the Dean and faculty members and friends of the School, as appropriate, in the cultivation and solicitation of high-level prospects (e.g., individuals, corporations, foundations and alumni).
• Creates and leads implementation of a comprehensive plan for the school’s fundraising program, including an operating schedule and budget for implementation.
• Personally interacts with, and cultivates, high-level prospects for gift giving.
• Works with senior staff and consultants to develop and implement a plan for creating a brand identity that differentiates the school and clearly articulates its mission.
• Works with senior staff and consultants to design an annual marketing campaign that delivers consistent messages and a clear identity in publications, advertisements, broadcasts, and web/online communications.
• Designs and oversees systems for identifying, researching and tracking donors and prospects, and updating donors/grantors on the positive results of their gifts.
• Builds and manages a team of development and marketing professionals and consultants, implementing processes to ensure accountability and effectiveness.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and eight years of progressively responsible fundraising experience, or related and transferable experience, required; advanced degree preferred.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience in the design and leadership of development programs, as well as a substantial record of achievement in personally cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations. S/he must have an entrepreneurial and imaginative mindset, as well as a demonstrated ability to gain the trust of, and work effectively with, a range of constituencies. Experience in marketing/public relations is preferred. The ability to act in an independent leadership role is critical.

The ideal candidate will possess exceptional interpersonal, writing and presentation skills, along with the self-confidence and sensitivity needed to build consensus. S/he will have some experience in the worlds of higher education or journalism.

Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience

FLSA Status: Exempt
