The CUNY Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program, launched in 1981, offers interdisciplinary courses of study in ten areas:
- American Studies
- Approaches to Modernity
- Bioethics, Science, and Society
- Biography, Autobiography, and Memoir
- Film Studies
- International Studies
- Landmarks of Western Thought
- Latin American American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies
- Urban Education
- Women’s Studies
Students in the program must take two "core" courses in a single area of concentration.

To complete work for the 30-credit MALS degree, students take 21 credits in course offered by the various doctoral programs at The Graduate Center and write a thesis (3 credits).
