Raising and Control in DP
Ivy Sichel (Hebrew University of Jerusalem)
February 16, 2006 (Thursday)
4:15 PM - ; Room 6417, the CUNY Graduate Center
Despite the focus within Government and Binding on non-finite complementation, Raising, and Control, related facts in DP, though often mentioned, are still poorly understood. Why does DP allow Control but not Raising? Is Control in DP Obligatory or Non-Obligatory? Are infinitives in DP complements or adjuncts? The elimination of Government within the Minimalist Program has produced a number of more fine-grained theories about the distribution of non-finite clauses, which, taken together, neutralize the significance of the ever mysterious IP/CP infinitive distinction, and lead to clearer conclusions regarding the inseparability of distribution and interpretation. Taking these as a starting point, the talk re-examines Raising and Control in DP, argues for the existence of Raising and for the obligatory nature of Control, and considers the implications for the complement/adjunct distinction from a Bare Phrase Structure perspective.
