Speaking in time

Experimental and observational data indicate that people do not tend to prepare the words that they speak much in advance of articulating them. At the same time, they do not necessarily utter words or phrases as soon as they are prepared. In this talk I will present eye tracking and timing data that suggest that speakers coordinate when they prepare words and when they articulate them in a more sophisticated way than current theories of language production posit. Further, the relationship between planning and execution of speech may parallel the preparation and execution of other sequential actions such as arm movements.
