The CUNY Phonology
Forum, in conjunction with the Linguistics Program, is sponsoring the CUNY Workshop
on Phonological Features, March 10 and 11, 2005. Organizer and contact person: Professor Charles Cairns. CUNY Faculty Participants: Professor Dianne Bradley and Professor Robert Vago. Goals and background of the CUNY Phonology Forum: The field of phonology has not agreed on two important theoretical questions: How should phonological objects be represented? What is the optimal architecture for phonological theory? The goal of the Forum is to facilitate productive discussion of these questions, which cut across different schools within the discipline. (A longer description of the Forum may be obtained here for a Word version, and here for a pdf version.) The Forum engages in two kinds of activities. It sponsors public events such as last year's Symposium on Phonological Theory and the current Workshop. The two workshop speakers, Professors Clements and Dresher, are leading scholars of feature theory. They are in sufficient agreement that a fruitful exchange is assured, yet there is sufficient disagreement that it promises to yield new insights. The second type of activity will be to use this web site as a locus for active and productive discussion of questions concerning architecture and representations in phonological theory. We will organize the discussion on this web site around the topics discussed at last year's symposium and the current workshop. All linguists are invited to participate in this discussion in either or both of two ways; first, by emailing suggestions for possible future topics and formats for discussion and, second, by contributing your ideas about the papers posted for discussion. Please email Chuck Cairns. All submissions will be posted, either directly (if they are of reasonable length) or by means of a link. PAPERS POSTED FOR
DISCUSSION ARE AVAILABLE BY CLICKING HERE. |
