Graduate Program in Linguistics at the City University of New York

professional development

The Professional Development Series was established in Spring 2003 as a means to help students become successful working linguists by giving them some practical knowledge and skills that will be useful in professional life. Speakers discuss such topics as employment opportunities for linguists and skills necessary for both academic and non-academic positions.

Talks take place every other Thursday in room 6417 of the Graduate Center, followed by an informal reception in the Linguistics Lounge on the 7th floor.

Past talks have highlighted an array of topics: resumes, writing abstracts, grants/how to find funding, non-academic opportunities for linguists and strategies for succeeding in academia.
