Most instructors will tell you that they've learned more by teaching than by sitting in a classroom. Why is this true? What is involved in the process of planning and delivering instruction? And how can you, as an instructor, improve your teaching and your students' learning?

In this interactive workshop, we will explore the challenges of teaching an undergraduate linguistics course and model approaches that encourage students to learn actively. We will explore such questions as: How to 'cover' your coursework: breadth vs. depth? How to 'pace' your class - why am I always running out of time? How and when to assess your students - are exams the only answer? We will take you through the process of planning a course and a sample lesson that encourages students to become engaged in the material and moves the instructor off center stage.
