The Edwin Booth Award was established in 1983 by the Doctoral Theatre Students Association to honor a person, organization, or company in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the New York City/ American Theatre and Performance Community. Only students in the program nominate candidates and elect recipients. Named after the nineteeth-century actor who was also renowed for his intellect, the award promotes integration of the professional and academic theatre communities. Past honorees include:
The Royal Shakespeare Company (83), Ellen Stewart (84), Joseph Papp (89), Arthur Miller (92), Richard Foreman (97), Tony Kushner (02), Paula Vogel (05), and Karen Finley (08).

Judith Malina (b. Germany) is an American theater and film actor, writer, director, and one of the founders and leaders of The Living Theatre. Moving to New York in 1928, she later attended the New School for Social Research in to study theatre under Erwin Piscator. Influenced by the philosophies of Piscator and Bertolt Brecht, Malina nonetheless went on to create (with LT co-founder Julien Beck) a distinct form of political theatre that has since influenced generations of artists. In addition to her continued work with The Living Theatre, Malina the actress has been featured in a diverse number of films such as The Addams Family, Dog Day Afternoon, & The Sopranos.
