Intensive work in musicianship skills, including but not limited to solfège,
reading of alto, tenor, and soprano clefs, advanced work in rhythm and
meter, score reading at the piano, and singing of tonal and post-tonal
melodies. Dictation in one, two, and four parts.

Techniques for effective research, criticism, speaking,
and writing about music at the graduate level. Information
literacy in music. Topics include: good habits of inquiry,
research, criticism, and writing about a selected musical subject;
fundamental reference tools for research; online resources; significant
local music archives; efficiently locating particular scores, recordings,
and music vendors; current copyright regulations; understanding and
summarizing ("abstracting") exemplary advanced writing about
music; cogent vs. grandiloquent and boring writing about music; how to edit
one's own writing; correct source citation; preparing a thesis or project
proposal; old vs. new musicology; scholarly vs. practical editions; career
planning and developing one's résumé. Weekly assignments through
individual and group exercises, written assignments, and team projects. Term
project (12-15pp.) will be a paper proposal (with annotated bibliography) or
book review on an approved topic or recent book. Participants will use the
course's Blackboard web-site. Home access to the Internet will
help.
This seminar is strongly advisable for students in their
first year of study for the master's degree in music; it is a required
course for students later planning to complete a doctorate in music.
