Music Forum
The Music Forum features a series of free lectures,
workshops, and discussions, sponsored by the Music
Theory and Musicology
Departments of the Graduate Center. The meetings are held in Room 3491
(unless otherwise noted) of the Graduate Center. All events will take place in the large seminar room (3491).
NOTE: Music Forum events are open to Graduate Center students and
faculty only.
April 28 (Monday at 5:30):
José Luis Palacios (Professor of Music History, Universitat Jaume I, Castellón (Spain) & Visiting Scholar at The Graduate Center), “The Valencian Villancico in the 18th century”
May 1 (Thursday at 6:15): Tuning Medieval Voices: Kalamazoo Medieval Conference Previews (in 3389)
Alan Richtmyer, "An Unusual Gloss on the Motet Detractor est/Qui Sequuntur/Verbum iniquum in Paris, BnF, MS fr. 571"
Richard Porterfield, "The “Re-la, re-fa” Rule, Its Sources and Interpretations"
May 5 (Monday at 5:30): Kyra Gaunt (Baruch College, CUNY)
Downloading Hip-hop, Uploading P2P Networks (or How Spain, a Russian, J Dilla and Garage Band Inspired a Brother from Brooklyn to Produce)
May 8 (Thursday at 3:00):
Susan Forscher Weiss (Peabody Conservatory) and Ichiro Fujinaga (McGill University), “New Evidence for the Origins of the Timpani in Western Europe”
Mauricio Molina (Ensemble Sendebar), “Fai totz los cascavels ordir: Reconstructing the Timbre and Performance Practice of the Medieval Iberian Round Frame Drum with Jingles”
This Forum will follow the Sendebar concert that runs from 1:00 to 2:00. Since there will no doubt be a crowd for that, and since we have no idea how many of those attendees will also come up for the papers, please let Allan Atlas know if you plan to attend the Forum papers at 3:00. We can probably seat no more than about twenty-five people, including the six or seven students who are in the Renaissance pro-seminar during which the Forum is taking place.
May 15 (Thursday at 5:30):
Steve Blum, “The Doctrine of Ethos from Greek through Arabic to Persian”
Unless noted, all events will take place in the large seminar room (3491).
