Students who enter the program with only
the bachelor's degree must complete a total of 60 credits,
including: six 700-level pro-seminars, one in bibliography and
research methods, three in ethnomusicology, one in Western
music, one in anthropology. The remaining 30 credits are
described below.
Students who enter the program with the master's degree must
complete a total of 30 credits. Those who lack courses that
should have been taken as part of their master's will be asked
to make them up beyond the required 30 credits. Requirements
comprise: four 800-level research seminars (one must be a
regional studies seminar, and one must be on a cross-cultural
topic); two seminars in anthropology or another approved related
field (which may include further 700-level or 800-level courses,
and/or independent study). Courses at the master's level should
have included bibliography, one seminar in the history or
theory/analysis of Western music, two seminars in
ethnomusicology, one course in anthropology.
Students who do not have a master's degree in ethnomusicology
must take a written First Examination upon reaching 30 credits;
this serves as a qualifying exam for the final 30 credits and
entitles the student to the "en route" M.A., which is awarded at
45 credits. Students pursuing the Ph.D. must pass language
examinations, the Second (or Comprehensive) examination, and
submit a dissertation.
