Student Handbook

Advisory System

The program has a number of faculty members who serve as advisors to pre-dissertation-level students:
Allan Atlas -- musicology
Joseph Straus -- theory
Stephen Blum -- ethnomusicology
David Olan -- composition
Norman Carey -- performance

Their primary purpose is to advise students about courses, scheduling of exams, and whatever else comes to mind. Students should consult them at least once each semester prior to registration.

That these five members of the faculty are dubbed "advisors for pre-dissertation-level students" does not mean: (1) that students cannot form close student-mentor ties with other faculty members early on in their studies; indeed, students are strongly urged to develop such ties; or (2) that students cannot continue to consult with them even at the dissertation stage.

In all, students are strongly urged to seek out faculty members whom they can consult on any number of items pertaining to studies in particular and the profession at large.

Entering students in musicology and composition are required to take an advisory examination in musicianship to steer them in one of several directions to address areas that might need some work.
