Student Handbook
NEW ITEMS IN HANDBOOK
There are a number of changes policy and procedure in this edition. Also,
some policies and procedures which were long-standing oral traditions in the
program have now been put in writing. Below I highlight some of the most
important changes and additions. Please let me or your area adviser know if
you have questions.
--David Olan, Executive Officer
FIRST EXAMINATION.
Two-week paper (Part B): When and if revisions are required, they must be
completed within one month from the date on which the unrevised paper is
returned to the student.
For Theory students Part C of the First Examination (the Keyboard Exam) has
been renamed the Musicianship Exam and is no longer part of the First Examination. The Musicianship Exam must be passed before the Second
Examination may be taken.
LANGUAGE EXAMINATIONS.
Students must complete their language requirement before taking the Second
Examination (Comprehensive Examination for DMA Performance Students).
Students pursuing the Ph. D. must pass one of their exams in German. French
or Italian is the customary second language, though another language may be
substituted with the approval of the Area Adviser and the Executive Officer.
Ethnomusicology students may, with approval of the Deputy EO and the EO,
substitute two languages that are appropriate to their areas of study.
SECOND EXAMINATION (Comprehensive Examination for DMA Performance Students).
To maintain Satisfactory Progress, students must take the Second Examination
(DMA Comprehensive Exam) by the second time it is given after they complete
course work.
A student who fails the Second Examination (DMA Comprehensive Exam) will be
permitted another opportunity within one year to take and pass the examination. A student who fails any part of the Second Examination a second
time may appeal to take the exam a third time; the appeal will be in writing
to the Executive Officer, who in consultation with the Examining Committee
for the most recent exam, will make a determination. A student who fails the
exam a third time, or who is denied the privilege to take the exam a third
time, will be dropped from the program. Students may appeal the decision to
the Executive Committee.
DISSERTATION PROPOSAL
To maintain Satisfactory Progress toward the degree, the dissertation proposal should be submitted in the semester following successful completion
of the Second Examination, but in no case later than one year after completion of the Second Examination (DMA Comprehensive Exam).
Students who have already exceeded the time limits indicated to take the
second examination (DMA Comprehensive Exam) or submit a dissertation proposal will have an additional year from the start of the Fall 2003
semester to be in compliance.
DISSERTATION DEFENSE
The copy of the dissertation submitted to the final six-person committee
should include all elements that will be required in the deposited dissertation, including abstract, table of contents, footnotes,
bibliography, etc. Members of the committee must receive their copies of the
dissertation at least one month before the defense date.
