Faculty :: Course Requirements :: Recital Requirements :: Admissions
Fall 2012
Admissions: To apply to the DMA program in musical
performance, send the following through the
Admissions Office
website no later than December 1, 2011:
(1) An online application form.
(2) Two letters of recommendation.
(3) Scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE): Verbal,
Quantitative, and Analytical
(4) One or two samples of your written work, that is: a substantial term
paper or a chapter from an undergraduate or Master's thesis, etc.
(5) TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores: Required of any
applicant without a degree from an English-speaking college or
university
(6) The first round of auditions consists of a pre-screening CD. This
recording should contain 40-60 minutes of your playing (singing). The
program should include solo repertoire from (at least) three different
musical periods. For string players and pianists, a complete sonata from
the 18th or 19th century is required. It is recommended (but not
required) that you include one work composed after 1950. For the
remaining piece or pieces, you may, if you choose, include complete
movements excerpted from longer works. The recording does not need to be
of a live performance.
If the adjudicators determine that your application materials (including
the recorded performance) are satisfactory, you will be notified by
early January regarding arrangements for an audition at the CUNY
Graduate Center. Auditions - by appointment only - will be scheduled
either Friday or Saturday, February 3 and 4, 2012.
In addition to the general University requirements for admission,
applicants for the Performance DMA must present an adequate background,
as judged by the Admissions Committee, in the areas of music history,
music theory, and analysis. They must demonstrate promise of achievement
in study, research, and scholarly writing.
If you have any further questions meanwhile, please contact Prof. Norman
Carey, Deputy Executive Officer, DMA Program in Performance.
