Performance D.M.A. Program: Course Requirements

COURSE REQUIREMENTS FOR DMA PERFORMANCE  MAJORS

A minimum of 60 credits of approved course work is required for a D.M.A.–Performance. Courses will be credited toward the D.M.A. – Performance only if they are part of a program approved by the Executive Officer or his/her deputy.

• In addition to meeting general University requirements, applicants are expected to have completed a program in Performance leading to the Master of Arts, Master of Science, or Master of Music Degree (or their equivalent).

• It is expected that applicants have completed the following three courses within their Master’s curriculum:

        A course in bibliography or research techniques
        A proseminar in music history
        An advanced harmony course

Students accepted into the DMA program who lack any or all of these prerequisite courses will take them at one of the CUNY campuses at the beginning of their studies.

Courses will be credited toward the D.M.A.–Performance only if they are part of a program approved by the Executive Officer or Deputy Executive Officer. The following courses are required of all students: Studio Tutorial (private lessons) and Ensemble for four semesters each; two seminars in Source Studies and Performance Practices; Analysis for Performers; and one research seminar in music theory or music history. The second seminar in Source Studies and Performance Practices and the research seminar in music theory or music history may be taken only after completion of the language examination. Students are required to take one elective course in musicology, theory, ethnomusicology, or repertoire.
