ADMISSIONS PROCEDURES FOR CURRENT PROGRAM M.A.
STUDENTS
October 3 , 2007
Deadlines:
For M.A. students in their second or third semester of study who have completed between 9 and 30 credits, the deadline to apply to the Ph.D Program is November 15, 2007. If admitted, you will remain enrolled as an M.A. student through the Spring 2008 semester and then be reclassified as a Ph.D student for the Fall 2008 semester. This will allow you to be considered for Financial Aid for the Fall 2008 semester.
Students who wish to complete their M.A. thesis and graduate before officially transferring to the Ph.D Program will have the option to do so during their fourth semester of study.
For M.A. students in their first semester of study who are taking at least 9 credits, the deadline to apply to the Ph.D Program is January 15, 2008. If admitted, you will remain enrolled as an M.A. student through the Spring 2008 semester and then be reclassified as a Ph.D student for the Fall 2008 semester. This will allow you to be considered for Financial Aid for the Fall 2008 semester.
Program
Protocol:
M.A. students who wish to be admitted
to the Ph.D. program may apply to the Ph.D.
program after completing between 9 and 30 M.A.
credits, of which 9 must be from the CUNY Graduate
Center Political Science Program. The
Political Science Admissions Committee will
review their M.A. admissions packets, which
include two new letters of recommendation from
program faculty, and their Political Science
Program transcripts. (To be considered
for admission, M.A. students should have approximately
a 3.5 G.P.A. or above.)
Students who enter the Ph.D. program via the
M.A. will have the status of Ph.D. students.
Once admitted to the Ph.D. program, these students
must pass the first exam at the Ph.D. level.
Like all Ph.D. students who pass the exam at
the MA level but not at the Ph.D. level, they
will receive a terminal M.A. degree after submitting
a master's thesis.
Students considering applying for transfer from the MA to the PhD Program are encouraged to meet with Professor Charles Tien for more information on the transfer process.
