Curriculum & Program Requirements

Course requirements for the Ph.D. degree include a minimum of 90 academic credits completed within the Clinical Subprogram, divided among theoretical, research, and practicum courses, plus a year-long internship requirement.

There are two doctoral examinations in addition to the usual requirements of completing and defending the doctoral dissertation. The First Doctoral Examination is considered fulfilled when the student achieves a test score of 600 or above on the Advanced Psychology Graduate Record Examination. This must be achieved before students have completed 30 credits in the program.

The Second Doctoral Examination is an extensive written and oral presentation of a clinical case, with the explicit expectation that the student will synthesize relevant therapeutic and diagnostic research issues, along with the influence of race/ethnicity to create a multidimensional view of the patients.

Dissertations in clinical psychology may consist of a broad range of topics and methods. Our commitment is to high-quality, disciplined inquiry in any mode that is appropriate for pursuing the student's research interest. The meaningful pursuit of clinically relevant knowledge and understanding, rather than ritualistic adherence to a particular methodology, is a shared goal of our students and faculty. Typically, students in the subprogram are on internship after their fourth or fifth year, having completed the dissertation proposal prior to applying for internship. Typically, students will take four years to complete the required course work and in-residence clinical training.

The model course of study during the four years in residence involves a fairly structured sequence of courses early in the Program, with an increasing number of specialized elective courses as one proceeds (though individualized programs may be created from the very beginning, depending on the student's needs and interests).

Students must complete a distribution of at least 24 credits across five basic areas of psychology.
