"New York Celebrates Africa" Week
Monday October 15th – Sunday October 21st

The LAC has developed a listing of programming on Africa in the New York City area that takes advantage of the city as a cultural resource. Meeting attendees will be given a brochure listing African restaurants, night clubs, art galleries, museums, theater and music performances, tours, festivals, etc.

Come celebrate the beginning of New York Celebrates Africa Week at the newly renovated Schomburg Center. In honor of the 50th Anniversary of the ASA, the Local Arrangements Committee has organized a full week of events from October 14th to October 21st which will showcase Africa-related New York City venues including restaurants, museums, workshops, art galleries, and nightclub performances.

NYU Reception for "New York Celebrates Africa" Week
Wednesday, October 17, 6:00-9:00 pm
Barney Building, 34 Stuyvesant Street
(At 9th Street between 3rd and 2nd Avenues.)

The Barney Building at NYU will host a reception for NYC Celebrates Africa Week as a part of the African Studies Association conference.

  • Festive food and drink from 6-9pm in the Commons.
  • The AKOYA AFROBEAT ENSEMBLE will perform from 6:30-7:30pm
  • Film projects from students who have studied in Africa will be screened from 7:30-9:00pm in Einstein Auditorium

"An Evening in Harlem"

Begin with a Champagne bus ride from the Sheraton Hotel on a narrated tour past dramatic Columbus Circle and the famous Lincoln Center.

First stop is the Contemporary African Art Gallery which is holding a reception for ASA member Nnenna Okore. Join Nnenna, other colleagues and New York art lovers for conversation and refreshments while viewing new works by this extraordinary Nigerian artist and teacher.

Then it’s on to hear live music at a jazz club on 125th Street, where the heart and soul of Harlem come together. You will have a return bus ride to the hotel after this memorable New York night.

"Meet the Meerkat and Hello Bumblebee Bat"

American Museum of Natural History

The American Museum of Natural History is Running a Family and Children's Program entitled "Meet the Meerkat and Hello Bumblebee Bat." AMNH mammalogist Darrin Lunde and award-winning scientific illustrator Patricia Wynne will discuss their books, focusing on the bodies, behaviors, habitats, and diets of these two creatures from the Kalahari Desert.
