Lehman College, approaching its 40th anniversary, has a tradition of excellence in science doctoral education. The College is poised to take this excellence to the next level with the construction of its new Science Facility, the first phase to be completed in early 2010, with the second phase to follow. This new 180,000 gsf facility will house state-of-the-art open research laboratories in a collegial, interdisciplinary environment. The College is the home of the Plant Science doctoral subprogram, a unique joint relationship between CUNY and the renowned New York Botanical Garden. Students have opportunities to study diverse research areas such as natural products chemistry, metabolic engineering, and plant/microbe interactions. In addition, strong faculty interest exists in systemic physiology, neuroscience, and aquatic and field ecology. Many faculty hold joint appointments in both the Biology and Biochemistry subprograms. In Physics, we have a strong emphasis on several areas of theoretical physics including superconductivity, magnetism and quantum information science.
