York College, founded in 1966 and located on a 50-acre campus in Jamaica–Queens, is newly-committed to CUNY’s Ph.D. program in the Sciences. Research is concentrated in three Departments – Chemistry, Biology, and Earth and Physical Sciences. Chemistry currently contributes eight Graduate Faculty to its Doctoral Program, with a variety of research interests. Major scientific themes are spectroscopy, synthesis and modeling. Biology provides a further four Graduate Faculty to its Doctoral program, with emphasis at the cellular and molecular level. There is also considerable overlap between Chemistry and Biology through the Biochemistry program. As a result, York can offer a broad yet complementary range of research interests, all well suited to pursuit of a Ph.D. degree. The College itself is very well equipped with a full complement of major research instrumentation to support these efforts. Furthermore, York continues to receive extensive external support from a number of agencies (e.g. NIH, NSF, DOD). Incoming graduate students will therefore find themselves working in modern laboratories alongside dedicated faculty, experienced post-doctorals, full-time technicians and gifted undergraduates.
