Degree Requirements

A minimum of 51 credits of doctoral work, distributed as follows, is required:

  • 27-credit core curriculum consisting of: Program Design and Administration, Social Welfare Policy and Planning, and Research Design and Methodology

  • 12 credits of electives

  • 12 credits for the two-term Dissertation Seminar

Upon completion of the first-year core curriculum, the student must prepare a paper that, upon approval of the faculty, permits continuation of study in the student's area of specialization.

Qualifying Examinations

Upon completion of all required course work, except the Dissertation Seminar, the student must pass a qualifying examination. After passing this examination, the student is admitted to candidacy for the Ph.D. Before a student is permitted to commence work on the dissertation, a prospectus or proposal must be submitted and accepted, and the inquiry must be approved by an I.R.B. (Independent Review Board).

Dissertations

The dissertation research project is designed by the student with the guidance of his/her dissertation chair and committee. All dissertations must focus on developing knowledge in a significant area of social work practice, policy or education. Dissertation research projects may be, qualitative, quantitative or multi-method in approach. All dissertations must meet rigorous standards of research and scholarship. The student must complete a final oral defense of his/her dissertation.
