Non Degree Student Status

Students who have an accredited MS(W) Degree may apply to take up to (2) courses (6 credits total) on a non-matriculated basis in the Ph.D. Program in Social Welfare. One course may be taken per semester. Only a small number of students will be accepted on a non-matriculated basis. *Each semester, between one and two courses are open to non-matriculated students:

  • Spring Semester
    Theories of Change for Social Work Practice, Hunter College School of Social Work

  • Fall Semester (Choice of two)
    1. Education in Social Welfare, Hunter College School of Social Work
    2. Comparative Approaches to Theory and Practice in Social Work, Hunter College School of Social Work 

In order to apply for non-degree status you must:

  • Obtain and complete the "Application for Non-Degree Student Status"

  • Submit undergraduate and graduate transcripts.

  • Submit 2 academic letters of recommendation. Up to one professional reference is also accepted.

  • Submit a (1) page personal statement indicating your reasons and goals for taking non-matriculated courses and anything considered important for judging your abilities, (including titles, articles and any other materials published, academic honors, etc.)\

*Please note that acceptance into non-matriculated courses in no way guarantees acceptance into the Ph.D. Program in Social Welfare. Students who take non-matriculated courses and are interested in applying for full-time status in the Ph.D. Program in Social Welfare must file a separate application for admission. They will be considered for admission along with all other prospective applicants. If admitted, non-matriculated courses are transferable for credit in the Ph.D. Program.
