This course will evaluate past, current and future tools for evaluating peripheral auditory function in the context of determining whether hearing is normal or impaired. Possible discussion topics may include; What is the best way to evaluate if hearing is normal or impaired? Can we predict who will have hearing problems in the future? We will explore the advantages and weaknesses of the audiogram used as the "gold standard" of hearing assessment. Objective tools such as the Evoked Potentials and Otoacoustic emissions will also be evaluated (with emphasis on Otoacoustic Emissions). Similarly we will compare Tympanometry, the standard tool for evaluating middle ear function with newer tools such as wideband reflectance. In addition to evaluating existing procedures, the class participants will be encouraged to explore new potential tools.
