Course Listing

The complete list of courses may be found in the Bulletin of The Graduate Center. Courses designated as 70000-level courses may be offered at one or more units of the University. and although identical course numbers may have different titles, they should cover substantially similar material. Brief course descriptions may be found in the graduate bulletins of the individual senior colleges. 80000-level courses are advanced graduate courses open exclusively to doctoral students and normally taught at The Graduate Center.

Doctoral-Level Courses

Each student must complete at least four 80000-level courses in Speech and Hearing Sciences. Additional 80000-level courses may be taken outside the discipline with the approval of the Executive Officer. The latter and Independent Study (89800) may be taken in addition to, not in lieu of, the foregoing requirement. Some courses are designated as "Studies" or "Seminar" courses. "Studies" courses provide critical reviews of relevant literature to delineate the boundaries of knowledge in selected areas. "Seminar" courses provide students with a forum in which individual areas of interest may be studied in depth. Normally, "Studies" courses precede "Seminar" courses in particular areas of interest.

Independent Study

Independent Study (89800) may be taken for the purpose of carrying out a library research paper or empirical study under the supervision of a faculty member. The project should be designed so that it can be completed in one semester and must result in a written document submitted to the instructor. It is assumed that the student and faculty member will meet on a regular basis and as often as necessary to bring about the successful completion of the project. In the event the project has not been completed, the student may repeat the course without credit. For a student to enroll in Independent Study, permission from the instructor must be obtained. A student may take Independent Study more than once for credit, with the approval of the Executive Officer.

Dissertation Seminar

Students preparing dissertation proposals must enroll in 89900, Dissertation Seminar, each semester until the proposal has been completed and approved by the dissertation committee. The seminar meets monthly and is attended by all students preparing proposals, members of the doctoral faculty, and the student’s research mentor. The format of the class provides each student with an opportunity to report progress on the proposal, to identify problems encountered during the process, and to receive input from faculty and students. In addition, students benefit from hearing about the research design issues other students face.
