General Aspects of the Program
The Ph.D. Program in Speech and Hearing Sciences is a unique consortium
of faculty and resources from the senior colleges and The Graduate
Center of the City University of New York. Since its inception in
1965, it has achieved a reputation for excellence in doctoral education
and has graduated many individuals who have assumed positions of
leadership in a variety of settings and who have contributed significantly
to the advancement of knowledge in the processes and disorders of
human communication.
The doctoral program is designed to prepare scholars and researchers
with a capacity to develop broad theoretical and conceptual frameworks
that will enable them to strengthen their understanding of the major
issues embodied in the speech, language, and hearing sciences. Although
programs of study are individualized to meet each student’s academic
and career objectives, it is the philosophy of the faculty that
the discipline is a unified one encompassing all areas of speech,
language, and hearing. Thus, academic programming requires a basic
understanding across fields of specialization that will enable students
to apply their knowledge and skills to sub-specializations and to
related disciplines. It is hoped that students will recognize that
the various academic and research opportunities provided by the
program are relevant to their total preparation in the field and
that they will participate in many diverse learning experiences
regardless of their particular interests or career goals.
The mission of the Ph.D. program is to provide leadership personnel
in academic, research, and clinical settings concerned with the
scientific study of communication sciences and disorders. It is
not the goal of the program to produce finished teachers or researchers,
but individuals with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to continue
learning and growing throughout their professional lives. Students
need to recognize that the process of doctoral education is but
one phase in their total educational and professional training.
