Preparation in Research
The creation of new knowledge is the responsibility of those holding
the Ph.D. Academic job settings require research productivity, publishing,
and grant writing for retention and advancement in rank. Students
in the Ph.D. program should begin to build a foundation for independent
research careers. To prepare for these responsibilities, every student
is required to fulfill the following research activities.
Pre-dissertation Research Project
Each student must complete a pre-dissertation research project.
This project should be of limited scope and should be selected and
developed in collaboration with a faculty adviser. The project may
be initiated at any time following matriculation, although it is
normally begun after the First Examination has been passed. It must,
however, be completed prior to the Second Examination. The project
must be data based and adhere to the guidelines that generally define
empirical research. For guidance on how to prepare a research report,
students should obtain a copy of "Preparation of the Research Report,"
by Distinguished Professor Emeritus Arthur Boothroyd. Students are
encouraged to submit the manuscript for publication and/or presentation
at a scientific meeting. To complete the project successfully, the
student must:
- Prepare a written report of the research project.
- Submit the report to the faculty adviser for approval.
- Present the report orally before students and faculty.
- Submit the approved report to the Executive Officer.
Research Practicum
It is expected that every student complete at least
one year of supervised research under the mentorship of a faculty
member. Students funded on university or training grant traineeships
spend at least two days per week in laboratory research. Such
experience may be completed at the Center for Research in Speech
and Hearing Sciences, at one of the senior colleges of CUNY, at
one of the cooperating off-campus institutions, or at a site arranged
by the faculty member. Some students may complete this requirement
during their full-time residency year (during the first three
years of matriculation) in which the student is expected to spend
at least two days per week in supervised research activity. For
those students who are full-time, this requirement is normally
satisfied during their participation as research assistants. Ideally,
research practicum should culminate in one or more of the following:
-
Submission of an article for publication.
-
Submission for presentation at a state or national
convention.
-
Brown-bag oral presentation.
