Culture Club Takes the GC to the Opera, Hiking

Efua Okoh

The Culture Club is the newest DSC-chartered student organization, It will promote social interaction amongst students from various departments at the Graduate Center, a simple mission that, for whatever reason, few organizations at the Graduate Center publicly attempt to undertake.

The Culture Club is the brainchild of Math Program Assistant Program Officer Rob Landsman, who has been coordinating many of the extra-curricular events of the Math Program in recent years. Last year, Landsman shared the Culture Club idea with Math Program DSC representative Efua Okoh, who not only agreed that putting many of the Math Program’s extra-curricular events into a student organization was a great idea, but also soon thereafter began taking steps towards the club’s creation as a DSC-chartered student organization.

The Culture Club’s activities are open—not only to students of the Graduate Center, but also to the general public. The activities will be “cultural” in nature and may include events such as Broadway and off-Broadway shows, walking tours of historical sites in New York City, country trail hikes, day trips to cultural points of interest, and more. Tickets for ticketed events will be offered to GC students at discounted prices, although many events will be unticketed. All tickets for ticketed events will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis.

If you are interested in participating in the Culture Club, please email Efua Okoh at eokoh@gc.cuny.edu, and if you are a student of the Graduate Center please indicate so, as well as your department, in your email. If you are a matriculated student who would like to be involved in the planning and coordination of activities, the club is looking for a President and Treasurer for the 2004-2005 academic year. Also watch the pages and web site of The Advocate for information about Culture Club activities.

Efua Okoh is a student in the PhD program in Mathematics.
