Student
Election Ballots
Arrive In Mail This Week
Paul McBreen
The DSC strongly encourages all GC students to fill out and return
the election ballots which are arriving in the mail this week. The names
which appear on the ballot were submitted to us via a nomination process
and these students were contacted to confirm their willingness to run
for a DSC position. The programs which have no names listed require
write-in submissions. DSC will do a second round of phone calls and
emails to make certain that those who receive the most votes in a program
are indeed willing to represent their programs. It is best to write
in names of students who have expressed willingness to be involved,
since the DSC is an active body. It is very important that all programs
be represented at our plenary meetings. We are especially interested
in representation from programs not located at the GC. We need your
input!
The ballot consists of five sections on two pages. The first page contains:
the Faculty/Student Disciplinary Panel; Media Board; the At-Large Representatives
to the DSC; and the Student Academic Appeals Officer (on the reverse
side). The Faculty/Student Disciplinary Panel and the Student Academic
Appeals Officer require little if any time commitment during the school
year. These students are only called upon as situations arise.
The Media Board, however, is important and becoming more so. This body
has met recently and plans to take up its duties related to the DSC
and Advocate website in the near future. The At-Large Representatives
to the DSC section is also important. These people attend the DSC meetings
one Friday a month, along with the regular program representatives.
Technically, they represent the whole GC community, not just a specific
program. The DSC steering committee is currently establishing specific
duties for At-Large Reps since the duties currently laid out for these
positions are rather vague in the Constitution. These Reps are important
and in the future will contribute to the efficacy of the DSC even more
than they do now.
The second page, entitled “2004 Doctoral Students’ Council
(DSC) Program Representatives” is broken down by programs. Find
your program only and follow the instructions. These are the students
who will be responsible for attending meetings, bringing suggestions
to the plenary meetings from their fellow students and forwarding information
back to the students in their programs.
Again, we hope that all programs have sufficient representation for
2004-2005. Each program needs an elected rep and an alternate. The person
with the second-most votes in a program will be contacted to be the
alternate.
