Miguel Malo Update

Monday, November 24 - A spirited demonstration of over 50 people was held across from Bronx County Criminal Court, demanding that all charges be dropped against Hostos Community College student leader Miguel Malo. Malo is being tried on charges stemming from his August 2001 arrest. While the prosecution has charged Malo with assaulting CUNY peace officers, witnesses attest he was attacked for holding up a sign at Hostos protesting cuts in ESL, Spanish and bilingual programs.

In court today, the judge granted the prosecution a motion to postpone the trial for one week, until Monday, December 1 at 9:30 am. Outside, protesters from many CUNY campuses, joined by labor and community groups, chanted that "the defense of Miguel Malo is the defense of us all." Malo's supporters hope for a large turnout at his next trial. The courthouse is located at 215 East 161st street, one block west of Grand Concourse (take 4 or D train to 161st street and walk east).
