Forum: If you could choose only one for the rest of your life would you prefer to be an adjunct or a bartender?
Matthew Lau,
Grouch-Marxist Studies
Adjunct: That way you can permanently remain a non-member the academy. As Woody Allen said: 'I refuse to belong to any club that would have me as a member'
Olga Aksakalova,
English Adjunct: I've never really done anything else and there is really nothing I would rather do than teach.
Paul McBreen,
Classics Bartender: I have served as a bartender in the past as well as an adjunct and I would have to choose bartending. I am really opposed philosophically to the whole situation in academia currently where adjuncts are exploited.
Raja,
Anthropology Bartender: It's much more fun, it pays better, and I wouldn't want to be an adjunct all my life.
Noam Scheindlin,
Comparative Literature Adjunct: Because I love teaching. As an adjunct I could live without the money, but I would feel unfulfilled as a bartender.
Andy Newman,
Anthropology Bartender: I wouldn't be confident that I could eke by as an adjunct.
